\u201cGive me control of a nation’s money and I don’t care who makes its laws.\u201d This witticism by Mayer Amschel Rothschild, a German financier ranked among the leading businessmen in history, is the foundation on which the history of Haitian currency seems to be built, and also the stimulus that inspired Robert Lafond in his work entitled \u201cMonetary History of Saint-Domingue and the Republic of Haiti until 1874.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first edition of this work, dated 1958, was the work of Editions Larose, Paris 5th in France, before C3 Editions redesigned the cover and layout in 2026 through a new edition.The ordinary citizen who would seek to determine the reasons for Haiti’s visceral dependence on Western powers has no better path to follow than that of Robert Lacombe regarding the monetary history of Saint-Domingue and Haiti. A viewpoint widely endorsed by the preface writer of this work, economist Gary Olius, who argues that ‘The history of Haitian currency is the prism through which one can understand the reasons underlying Haiti’s unspeakable dependence on Western powers.’<\/p>\n\n\n\n
