The United States Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau visited Port-au-Prince this Friday, May 29, 2026. He was received at the National Palace by Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aim\u00e9. Photos published by the Prime Minister’s office and by the Deputy Secretary show the American official in meetings at the National Palace and at Champ de Mars. He also attended a shooting exercise involving members of the new Gang Suppression Force (GSF), which has not yet been fully deployed.According to a statement released ahead of his visit by the spokesperson of the U.S. Department of State, Mr. Landau was to discuss bilateral cooperation and security priorities with the head of government Fils-Aim\u00e9. \u201cHe will also meet with members of the Haitian National Police (PNH) as well as with personnel from the United Nations-authorized gang suppression force, in order to reaffirm the United States’ commitment to Haiti’s stability,\u201d the statement indicated.On X, the U.S. Secretary of State gave an account of his visit to Haiti, noting a significant change in the security situation. \u201cWhen our administration took office sixteen months ago, Haiti was on the brink, threatened by violent criminal gangs that risked taking control of the country and causing a total social collapse as well as a new influx of migrants (which would add to those that the Biden administration had actively encouraged to come).
