In front of the OAS General Assembly in Panama, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau praised the progress made in Haiti while calling on member states to increase their support for the gang suppression force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The United States has urged member countries of the Organization of American States to strengthen their commitment to Haiti, believing that the progress made in the fight against armed groups should be reinforced by increased support from the international community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a speech delivered on June 25 during the 56th General Assembly of the OAS in Panama, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau cited Haiti as one of the main regional issues requiring a coordinated response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The U.S. official recalled that a year earlier, he had called on the organization to deliver more concrete results in response to the crises affecting the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Returning to the situation in Haiti, Christopher Landau welcomed what he called a “positive dynamic” observed in recent months.He notably welcomed the unanimous adoption by the OAS of a resolution supporting the transition to the Gang Suppression Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to him, this decision helped pave the way for the later adoption of a United Nations Security Council resolution authorizing offensive operations against armed groups responsible for violence in Haiti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The American diplomat also highlighted the role played by the OAS in setting up an institutional and diplomatic framework for the FRG’s special representative, Jack Christofides, and his team.Christopher Landau said he personally went to Haiti on May 29 to assess the situation on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He mentioned being impressed by the progress made by the forces involved in security operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The American official also thanked the Bahamas, Canada, Guatemala, Jamaica, and El Salvador for their participation in the Standing Group of Partners Supporting Haiti.While acknowledging the progress made, Christopher Landau nevertheless warned that the work is far from finished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He urged member states to continue their efforts to ensure the renewal of the FRG’s mandate by the United Nations Security Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to him, this support will need to come in the form of additional funding, equipment, and human resources.”We cannot let Haiti fall back into chaos just because we declared victory too soon,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beyond the Haitian issue, the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State also talked about the situations in Bolivia, Cuba, and Nicaragua, calling for stronger defense of democracy in the Americas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He finally urged the OAS to take a more proactive approach to transnational crime, especially in the fight against drug trafficking and fentanyl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
