That’s the title of the painting workshop organized by the Pyepoudre Cultural Center. Led by painter Jean Dieubon Pierre, this training took place over two consecutive days. It brought together about ten young people, mostly students, eager to get started with painting. At the exhibition of works created during the workshop, the public spent a day exploring expressive and colorful worlds.

In the Pyepoudre premises, on this June afternoon, the sun is at its peak and the air is stifling. The need to cool off in the depth of the freehand drawings proved to be refreshing and relieving. It was an endless source of happiness. Like a river, the various exhibited works held a sense of hope.At the Fanfan Morisseau room, the pictorial world of painter Jean Dieubon Pierre opens up to the visitor. Step by step, the visitor lets themselves be enveloped by the power of his painting. These are small-sized paintings. Untitled, yet they speak to the viewer in their own way. The journalist’s canvases lean towards abstraction, that visual art which doesn’t aim to represent reality faithfully. Using shapes, colors, and textures, Dieubon’s painting expresses emotions.

The visitor continues their journey. In the animation room, they discover other worlds, those of young people expressing themselves through drawing and painting. Among other things, they’ll remember a drawing showing the ten fingers of our hands, as well as a portrait of a distorted totem. The visitor will also recall other drawings presenting all kinds of incomprehensible, elusive shapes that make you think. Through the drawings of these aspiring artists, a whole world of expression opens up to the curious visitor.

At the Pawòl exhibition, several pictorial worlds meet and tell their stories. Across about twenty paintings, these budding artists dipped their brushes into the colors of speech. Their art becomes expression and goes beyond simple technique to become a common language. The language of everyone. The work reflects the soul of the artist, what they feel or their identity. Art then becomes a tool for empowerment or a shield against forgetting.

In front of these various paintings, visitors find themselves questioning and reflecting on the reality they live in, as well as the reality portrayed through the creations of these young people. These works revolve around several fundamental aspects, including self-expression that conveys their emotions, traumas, or their view of the world. These pieces serve as a sort of escape, allowing them to express the inexpressible.

“Pawòl is a form of protest. It’s a way for me to express my distress, my revolt against the chaos in which the country is stuck. Everything was stolen from me, and art allowed me not to sink and not to give up. Pawòl is an act of resistance,” said the workshop facilitator, Jean Dieubon Pierre, commending the young people’s enthusiasm for this training.”This is my very first experience. It was amazing. This workshop was like a form of therapy for me. I’ve already thought about getting some basic materials so I can continue this experience,” confided Germanie Fieffé. For her part, Brege Guerl Lorné was happy to express herself through painting. “I’ve learned a lot and I’m going to keep going.”

Pawòl, a workshop full of learning and sharing. Over two days of training and creation, art captures the spirit of the times and societal issues. Through the works on display, it becomes a tool for expression and an act of resistance. Used as an outlet, this artistic workshop helps these young people assert themselves, express themselves, and face the reality they deal with every day.

Pawòl!
