High-ranking officials from governments in the region, United Nations representatives, multilateral organizations, parliaments, the private sector, academia, and civil society will gather from August 18 to 20, 2026, in Montevideo, Uruguay, to take part in the sixth session of the Regional Conference on Population and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean.During this meeting, the participants will look at the effects of demographic changes in Latin America and the Caribbean and will go over the progress made, the challenges faced, the best practices, and the current priorities for implementing the Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Conference was created in 2012 by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), which handles the secretariat, in coordination with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The official opening will take place on Tuesday, August 18, and on Wednesday, August 19, ECLAC will present its position paper titled “Impacts of Demographic Changes in Latin America and the Caribbean: Challenges and Policy Options,” aimed at feeding the discussions of the session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The program includes four round tables on topics such as “The Decline of Fertility,” “Aging and Long-Term Care,” “Intergenerational Solidarity,” and “Public Policies in the Face of Demographic Changes.”Before the start of the Conference, many participants will organize various activities. On Monday, August 17, the first Regional Private Sector Forum will take place at the headquarters of the Latin American and Caribbean Development Bank (CAF) in Uruguay. Its goal is to speed up the implementation of the Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development through private sector leadership, impact investment, and public-private collaboration. At the same time, on Tuesday, August 18, before the official opening, there will be a preparatory meeting for civil society, as well as several side events.During the first session of the Regional Conference, which was held in Montevideo from August 12 to 15, 2013, the delegates adopted the Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development. This document represents the most important intergovernmental agreement in the region on population and development and is a key part of the review process of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
