The town of Tiburon, in the Southern department, has been facing a worrying drought for about three months. The lack of rain is hitting farming and livestock activities hard. Farmers have already lost their crops, some seeds didn’t sprout, and several animals have died due to lack of water and food. The situation worries the local authorities, who are calling for quick government intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Met on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, Idelie Denis, a member of Tiburon’s interim municipal commission, spoke about the extent of the losses in the town. “Farmers have been losing their livestock, especially cows, because of the drought, for several months now,” she said.This period was supposed to be harvest time. In several plantations, the crops were destroyed due to lack of rain. Some farmers had sown seeds but couldn\u2019t get them to sprout, while others lost crops that had reached maturity. Banana plants are among the affected plantations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Livestock farming is also heavily impacted. \u201cThe farmers’ animals aren\u2019t eating. The mangroves are dried up. Animals go into the mangroves looking for water and food and never come back. They die,\u201d reported Idelie Denis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The drop in agricultural production and losses in the livestock sector also affect families\u2019 food supply. People have to spend more to eat, while fishing, farming, and livestock are the main economic activities in the town.For the municipal authorities, the resources available are not enough to cope with the scale of the situation. \u201cThe community of Tiburon is going through an extremely difficult crisis and needs immediate support from the central government. We at the town hall just can\u2019t make a big effort to help them,\u201d said Idelie Denis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ongoing drought also raises concerns for families with the upcoming school year. \u201cIf this keeps up, the situation would become chaotic for life in the town and especially for the start of the new school year.
