In an interview with the Spanish agency EL PAÍS on August 6, 2026, William O’Neill, an independent human rights expert on Haiti, warned about the consequences of deportations to the country, as the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) granted to around 350,000 Haitians in the United States comes to an end.

In an interview with the Spanish agency EL PAÍS on August 6, 2026, William O’Neill, an independent human rights expert on Haiti, warned about the consequences of deportations to the country, as the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) granted to around 350,000 Haitians in the United States comes to an end. According to him, a forced return cannot currently be safe, dignified, or sustainable. O’Neill questions the fate of people being sent back to a country that is already struggling to meet the needs of its population.
