Despite rising to the top of the FIFA World Cup scorers, Lionel Messi made sure to downplay the significance of this achievement.

“It’s an honor to find myself alongside Miroslav Klose and other greats, Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappé who scored two today. But I think it doesn’t mean anything, in the end, it’s just a statistic and nothing more,” said the captain of Argentina.

With 16 goals in the World Cup, Messi has joined Miroslav Klose at the top of the all-time top scorers of this competition.
