The Gang Repression Force (FRG) reports having established its first major operational presence outside the capital, with the deployment of Sri Lankan contingents in Artibonite.

The Gang Repression Force (FRG) announced that it has established its first major operational presence outside the capital, with the deployment of Sri Lankan units in Artibonite. This move comes as armed groups are strengthening their hold beyond Port-au-Prince. According to the FRG, this deployment marks a key step in the gradual expansion of the mission, supported by the ongoing arrival of new personnel, to help support the most vulnerable areas.A Sri Lankan contingent of the FRG has been deployed in the Artibonite department. The information was revealed to Le Nouvelliste on Thursday, August 6, 2026, by a spokesperson for the force. “I can confirm that a Sri Lankan contingent of the Gang Suppression Force (FRG) is currently being deployed in the Artibonite department. For operational security reasons, we are not able at this stage to provide further details on the number of personnel deployed, their exact positions, or their movements,” said the spokesperson.

After the West, Artibonite is the second region to host soldiers from the Gang Suppression Force (FRG). Authorized by the UN Security Council (through resolution 2793), the FRG aims to reduce and weaken the operational capabilities of armed gangs that terrorize the country. The FRG’s strategy is based on three pillars. The first is to reduce, and then dismantle, the territorial control held by the gangs. The second focuses on securing critical infrastructure, especially the main roads. And the third is about sustainably strengthening Haitian institutions so that, in the long run, they can handle gang violence on their own.
