Brazil overturned Japan (2-1) thanks to a goal from Gabriel Martinelli in stoppage time on Monday in Houston to reach the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, where they will face either Norway or Ivory Coast on Sunday.
Coming back with a goal from Casemiro (56th minute) after Kaishu Sano had opened the scoring (29th minute), the Brazilians had to wait until the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time for Martinelli to spare them extra time and allow them to continue their quest for a record sixth title.
Having lost in all four of their previous World Cup round of 16 matches (2002, 2010, 2018, 2022), the Japanese once again failed to win a knockout match in a World Cup.
