Chad will deploy 1,500 soldiers to Haiti as part of the Gang Repression Force (FRG) established by the United Nations, announced Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby on Monday.

Haiti, the poorest country in the Americas, has for years been ravaged by criminal gangs, which commit murders, rapes, looting, and kidnappings.

“The state will contribute to this force with 2 battalions of 750 personnel each, for a total strength of 1,500 men. A contingent of 400 men is already deployed in Haiti,” said the Chadian president in a message read by Ali Kolotou Tchaïmi, president of the National Assembly, in front of the deputies and senators.
