There is a real disagreement between the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) and the government regarding the cost of the upcoming elections. Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé considers the CEP’s proposed electoral budget of $250 million to be “unacceptable and absurd.” Meanwhile, sources within the CEP contacted by Le Nouvelliste defend this budget.
Today, neither the CEP nor the government can set dates for the next elections, even though the country has been in a “transition” phase and awaiting elections since July 2021, following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. Without an electoral calendar, a budget, or a decree governing the elections, and with criminal groups continuing to terrorize the population in several departments, the chances of holding elections this year are dwindling considerably. In an exclusive interview given Tuesday to Le Nouvelliste on the sidelines of his trip to Washington, USA, the Prime Minister categorically opposed the electoral budget presented to him by the CEP.
