At least three people died early Wednesday morning during the big celebrations held in Mexico City to celebrate Mexico qualifying for the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, city authorities said.
Mexico beat Ecuador 2-0 on Tuesday at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, securing their spot in the round of 16. This is also the first knockout game won by the Mexicans in the World Cup in 40 years.
More than a million people gathered to celebrate in the streets of the Mexican capital, mainly around the Angel of Independence monument in downtown, according to city hall estimates.
