The police took away and threw into the gutters the sandals of several motorcyclists, an action that’s getting mixed reactions on social media.

On Thursday, August 13, 2026, the National Police of Haiti carried out an operation in Delmas 33 during which several motorbike riders wearing sandals had their footwear confiscated by officers. The police told the riders that they were required to wear closed shoes or sneakers while riding their vehicles.

During the operation, several pairs of sandals were taken by the officers and then thrown into the gutters along the roadside. Videos of the intervention, widely shared on social media, show police officers determined to enforce this rule among the riders involved. The Juno7 editorial team was, however, unable to confirm whether this measure comes from an official decision made by the PNH hierarchy. No public statement announcing in advance a new rule forbidding motorcyclists from riding in sandals has, moreover, been found.

The move is sparking mixed reactions on social media. Some internet users praise the police initiative, believing that a motorbike rider, especially when carrying passengers, should wear clothing that allows them to ride more safely.Others, on the other hand, criticize this intervention and think that the police should mainly focus their efforts on the insecurity and violence from armed groups that are still affecting several areas of the country. Whether wearing closed shoes while riding a motorcycle is now an official instruction from the PNH remains, for the moment, publicly unclear.
