Three young Haitian leaders from civil society are taking part in the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development from July 7 to 15 to represent Haitian youth initiatives in implementing the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Three young Haitian leaders from civil society are taking part, from July 7 to 15, in the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development to represent Haitian youth initiatives in implementing the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The delegation includes Same Cadet, founder and president of the Inkit Global Sustainability and Environmental Alliance (IGSEA) and coordinator of the Support and Strengthening Group for Local Development Initiatives (GARIDEL); Adelin Pierre, UN Youth Leader for the Sustainable Development Goals, founder and board coordinator of the Haitian Youth Parliament for Water and Sanitation (PHJEA); and Forde Metelus, president of Project 3413.
Through their respective organizations, these young people are involved in achieving several Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land). Their efforts focus on building young people’s skills, protecting the environment, improving access to water and sanitation, raising community awareness, and carrying out projects that promote sustainable, inclusive, and resilient development.During the Forum, representatives of Haitian civil society will take part in panels, side events, and meetings with government officials, UN agencies, international organizations, and civil society groups. They will highlight initiatives carried out in Haiti, share their field experiences, and exchange best practices that could help speed up the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
An official Haitian delegation, led by the Minister of Planning and External Cooperation, is also attending this international meeting, showing the country’s commitment to tracking progress on the Sustainable Development Goals.At the end of the Forum, the three young leaders plan to launch a project to strengthen the institutional capacities of civil society organizations (CSOs). This initiative aims to better prepare Haitian CSOs to take part in the work of observer bodies under various international conventions and United Nations system mechanisms, in order to increase their representation, influence, and contribution to negotiations as well as international decision-making processes.With less than four years left until the 2030 Agenda deadline, young leaders believe that stronger collaboration between the government, civil society organizations, young people, the private sector, and technical and financial partners is essential. They think that only a coordinated and inclusive approach will speed up progress, tackle ongoing challenges, and help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals for the benefit of all Haitians.
