The first time was on July 3, 1990, against Italy, when Salvatore Schillaci scored first in the 17th minute before Claudio Caniggia equalized for the Albiceleste in the 67th minute. The Argentinians eventually won on penalties (1-1, 4-3).

Against England, the world champions came back once again. Down from the 55th minute, Argentina equalized in the 85th minute thanks to Enzo Fernández, before Lautaro Martínez gave them the win in stoppage time (90+2). Both goals were set up by Lionel Messi, who recorded a brace of assists.
