Tunisia, a unique case in World Cup history

By appointing Hervé Renard instead of Sabri Lamouchi in the middle of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Tunisia became the first team in history to change their coach twice during a World Cup.

The first time goes back to the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France. After a loss against England (0-2) in the first match, Henryk Kasperczak was fired and replaced by Ammar Souayah for the rest of the tournament.

Before Tunisia in 2026, only three other coaching changes had been recorded during a World Cup: Scotland in 1954, Saudi Arabia in 1998, and South Korea in 1998. Tunisia is now the only nation to appear twice on this very particular list.
