The Haitian government intends to leverage the deployment of the Gang Repression Force (FRG) to encourage airlines to return to Toussaint Louverture International Airport for international flights. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé during an interview with Le Nouvelliste on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, in Washington.
The Prime Minister indicated that FRG agents will be deployed within the airport infrastructure to ensure security. “Our argument is simple: if FRG agents are deployed at the airport to ensure security, there is no reason why American airlines shouldn’t return,” he stated.
Air traffic in Port-au-Prince has been severely disrupted since February 2024. The situation worsened in November 2024 when aircraft were struck by projectiles on the airport tarmac, amidst the reactivation of the “Viv ansanm” criminal coalition. Following these incidents, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) prohibiting U.S. airlines from serving the Haitian capital.
