Without fanfare, the Dominican Republic has just added a new record to its achievements. In addition to being a prime tourist destination in the region and a sought-after university destination attracting students of various and diverse nationalities, the Dominican Ministry of Agriculture recently announced that the neighboring Republic has become the leading rice producer in the Caribbean and Central America, surpassing on its own the combined production of all other territories. To support this statement, the Dominican authorities have published several documents and official communications, the most emblematic of which is none other than an official declaration from the Dominican Ministry of Agriculture dated April 2026, entitled: “The Minister of Agriculture announces that the Dominican Republic becomes the largest rice producer in the Caribbean and Central America.”

In this official communication, the Minister of Agriculture, Francisco Oliverio Espaillat, during the solemn launch of the national rice harvest, stated that the Dominican Republic cultivates about 1.5 million hectares of rice. With two harvests per year, rice represents 13 to 15% of the Dominican agricultural GDP.
