Around 1:30 PM GMT (3:30 PM in Paris), the price of a barrel of North Sea Brent, for delivery in August, on its first day of use as a benchmark contract, rose 4.92% to $95.60, after briefly surpassing 5%. Its American equivalent, the barrel of West Texas Intermediate, for delivery in July, gained 5.94% to $92.55.
