After federal judge Ana C. Reyes was forced to lift the suspension that kept the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian immigrants in Florida and other states, Guerline Jozef of the Haitian Bridge Alliance renewed her call to the government to ask for a moratorium on deportations of Haitians.
“The Haitian government has the means to advocate for finding protection for Haitians in trouble in the United States. The Haitian authorities need to do their part by explaining to the U.S. government that right now they don’t have the capacity to receive 350,000 Haitians in Haiti, and they can’t guarantee their safety,” Guerline Jozef said, speaking on Magik 9 radio, Friday, August 7, 2026.Guerline Jozef is also advising the Haitian community in the USA on what they can do to hope for a favorable vote on Senate Bill S4814 in the American Senate. “We’re asking all Haitians to reach out to their families and friends (whether the friends are Haitian or not) who are in the United States to call their district senator and ask them to be a co-sponsor and vote yes on Senate Bill S4814. This law should protect the lives of Haitians with TPS for 3 years,” Ms. Jozef said on the show Panel Magik.“Additionally, every Haitian who held temporary status is being asked to make sure they are in contact with a reputable lawyer or a reputable organization to see what possibilities exist for obtaining another form of protection,” said Guerline Jozef of the Haitian Bridge Alliance.
Hundreds of thousands of Haitians protected from deportation officially lost that protection on Wednesday, August 5, when a federal judge in Washington D.C. lifted the order that had prevented the Trump administration from implementing its decision to end it.
Federal Judge Ana C. Reyes was forced to cancel the suspension that kept Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian immigrants in Florida and other states, after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in June that the administration’s decision to end these protections was not subject to judicial review, according to the Miami Herald.
The judge was waiting for the official mandate from the Supreme Court, which was sent to the Washington federal appeals court on Monday, July 27, before being handed over to her on Tuesday. By lifting this suspension, about 350,000 Haitian immigrants with TPS in the U.S. now lose their protection from deportation.
