On the occasion of its 40th anniversary, celebrated on May 24, the Haitian Sports Press Association (ASHAPS) organized, on Sunday, May 31, 2026, a conference-debate on the theme “Sports Press and the World Cup: the Role of Journalists in Promoting the World Cup.” The event took place in the conference room of the Haitian Olympic Committee in Bourdon, in the presence of numerous sports journalists and several speakers from complementary fields. This meeting aimed to better prepare media professionals to cover the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a competition that holds particular significance for Haiti with the qualification of the Grenadiers. Three speakers led the discussions: economist Kesner Pharel, Haitian international referee Falonne Dieurisma, and sports law attorney Nathan Laguerre. In his speech, Kesner Pharel addressed the economic dimension of the World Cup. He notably emphasized the benefits generated by broadcasting rights, tourism, and all economic activities associated with an event followed by billions of viewers. The economist reminded that Groupe Croissance had already organized, last March, a conference with the Haitian Football Federation to explore different aspects related to Haiti’s participation in the World Cup. This time, his analysis focused exclusively on the economic opportunities offered by the competition. For her part, Falonne Dieurisma drew on her international experience to explain several subtleties of the Laws of the Game. Her presentation allowed the participants to better understand certain aspects of modern refereeing and to clarify several situations that regularly spark debates in the media and among the public. The most developed presentation, however, was that of Nathan Laguerre. The lawyer extensively addressed the legal issues surrounding the World Cup, in particular the questions related to the image rights of players, federations, and the various institutions involved in the organization and coverage of the event.
Through this initiative, ASHAPS, under the guidance of its Secretary General Kenson Désir, continues its mission of training and reflection, while inviting sports journalists to prepare for the many challenges involved in covering the biggest event in world football.
