The replenishment of USD 3.9 billion will help countries accelerate environmental action in agri-food systems

On World Environment Day, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) welcomed the 9th replenishment of the Global Environment Facility (GEF-9) and emphasized that it offers the opportunity to enhance agri-food systems-based solutions related to biodiversity, climate, land, pollution, and water management. With initial pledges of USD 3.9 billion for the four-year cycle, the 9th replenishment of the GEF will contribute to financing initiatives aimed at helping countries meet their environmental commitments through inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agricultural, food, and agri-food systems. The 9th GEF Constitution was approved at the 8th GEF Assembly, held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Ahead of the Conferences of the Parties (COPs) on land, biodiversity, and climate change, the GEF Assembly brought together 140 governments to catalyze action in the areas of climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation, water management, ocean health, and pollution. The previous GEF replenishment (GEF-8) already demonstrated the potential of agri-food systems-based solutions. For example, investments in land rehabilitation, which includes improving soils and grazing practices, lead to healthier pastures, more resilient livestock systems, and stronger livelihoods. Adopting climate-resilient rice varieties and improving practices contribute to lower input costs, increased yields, and reduced pressure on land and biodiversity. Implementing agroforestry systems allows farms to store more carbon, protect soils, promote biodiversity, and become more resilient to droughts, floods, and heat.
