The United States supports Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé and doesn’t want to keep recycling people who aim to become Prime Minister for an hour or a week during the transition, at a time of chaos where the survival of the Haitian state is at stake. Those interested are free to run in the elections, American chargé d’affaires Henry T. Wooster basically told Le Nouvelliste in an exclusive interview.
“No, there’s no blank check. Yes, we support him, as has been very clearly and publicly stated. We support him not because he would be ‘our choice,’ as if we had decided he should be the leader. But, for now, we need a transitional leader with executive skills to get through this period of political discord, carry the transition to completion, and organize the elections,” Henry T. Wooster said. “We don’t want to keep recycling people who want to step in to become Prime Minister for an hour, a week, a month… or president, or whatever they want to be. We are in a transition period. They’re free to run in the elections, and then they can become whatever they want. But in the meantime, while there’s so much chaos and even the question of the state’s survival is at stake,No: this is not the time to change horses,” said the American chargé d’affaires.
