In an interview given Monday in Columbus, Mr. DeWine said that the planned deportation operations would deal “a hard blow to Springfield” as well as to “the state of Ohio.” “These are people who really helped Springfield get back on its feet,” Mr. DeWine said, noting that Haitians have filled jobs and opened businesses in a city facing economic struggles. “The Haitians who live and work there came to take jobs, and they came because there were positions that others were not filling.”
Mr. DeWine also pointed out the disastrous security situation in Haiti, a country plagued by extreme poverty and years of political instability, where gangs control vast areas. The country is plunged into “almost total chaos,” the governor said, without “a shadow of a government,” prompting the U.S. State Department to advise Americans not to travel there.The governor predicted that many Haitians would choose to go to another country rather than go back home.
“Haiti is a hell today. So we would be sending people… to hell,” said Mr. DeWine. Very few of these Haitians will voluntarily return to Haiti. If they have to leave, they’ll go elsewhere. They want to work. They want to support their families. They don’t want to go back to Haiti,” he said, according to CBS.
