The IDB and the Korean National Police Agency (KNPA) have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen their cooperation in public security and institutional capacity in Latin America and the Caribbean.
This agreement sets up a non-exclusive framework to promote cooperation programs and projects aimed at improving public security in the region. The collaboration focuses on strengthening law enforcement institutions through the use of advanced investigative technologies and the KNPA’s ‘Korean police’ model.Emilio Pineda, head of the institutions development sector at IDB, highlighted: ‘This partnership shows our shared commitment to strengthening public safety in Latin America and the Caribbean. By combining KNPA’s expertise with IDB’s regional experience, we can help provide more effective and innovative responses to today’s security challenges.’Eduardo Vergara, head of the Citizen Security division at the IDB, also highlighted: “We see huge potential in this relationship, based on concrete results, shared commitment, and complementary strengths: the operational and technical expertise of the KNPA in policing, and the regional platform, expertise, and financing capacity of the IDB.”
Mr. Jun Sung Park, Director General of International Cooperation at the KNPA, said: “Building on the memorandum of understanding signed with the IDB, the KNPA aims to strengthen its partnership with countries in Latin America and the Caribbean by identifying and developing new cooperation projects aimed at promoting security in the region.
This partnership revolves around two main priorities:”
Strengthen institutional capacities, especially in police investigations and intelligence at the national and subnational levels, by leveraging Korean police expertise.
Speed up the adoption of cutting-edge technologies and digital solutions to modernize law enforcement systems across the region.
Under this agreement, the IDB and the KNPA will explore concrete actions, including promoting knowledge exchanges and consultations, as well as identifying new areas for collaboration.
Through this partnership, the IDB and the KNPA aim to boost law enforcement capabilities, encourage innovation in public safety systems, and help create safer and more resilient communities in Latin America and the Caribbean.
