The Ministry of the Environment (MdE) reports having ordered the immediate suspension, until further notice, of all sand quarrying activities in Pèlerin, Laboule, and Boutilier, due to major risks identified in these vulnerable areas, in the commune of Pétion-Ville. According to a ministry statement, technical assessments conducted by the Departmental Directorate of the West, the Directorate of Environmental Inspection and Surveillance (DISE), and the National Environmental Assessment Office (BNEE) revealed slope instability, accelerated erosion, and threats of landslides that could endanger populations and infrastructure. The MdE reminds that these sites had already been subject to restrictions in 2012, 2016, 2021, and 2025, and announces new measures: meetings with operators, revision of permit procedures, interinstitutional regulation protocol, impact studies, and awareness campaigns.
