UN experts estimated on Tuesday that the American attempts to destabilize Cuba, as part of a ‘coercion’ strategy, resemble ‘colonial practices’

UN experts estimated on Tuesday that American attempts to destabilize Cuba, as part of a ‘coercion’ strategy, are akin to ‘colonial practices.’

‘Attempts to alter the constitutional order of a sovereign state through threat and coercion are reminiscent of colonial-era practices,’ these experts said in a statement published in Geneva.

According to these specialists, mandated by the UN Human Rights Council but not speaking on behalf of the organization, ‘the statements of the President of the United States regarding “the honor of taking Cuba” reflect a deeply worrying strategy of coercion against a sovereign state.'”This statement is not mere rhetoric, but is part of a broader strategy including the long-standing embargo against Cuba, its listing as a state supporting terrorism, the recent energy blockade, as well as the imposition of coercive measures on third parties,” they added.

The country, under a U.S. embargo since 1962, has been experiencing a very severe economic crisis for years, worsened in recent months by the oil blockade imposed by Washington and other U.S. economic sanctions. The United States further increased pressure on the island last week by indicting its former president Raul Castro, accused of the murder of Americans in a case dating back to 1996.

This indictment seems, in the eyes of experts, to “fit into these efforts to undermine Cuba’s sovereignty,” just like the recent deployment of the aircraft carrier Nimitz in the Caribbean Sea.These actions, which occur ‘following the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Maduro in January 2026’ and the proclamation by President Trump, in March 2026, ‘of the so-called +Donroe Doctrine+, affirming the predominance of the United States over the Western Hemisphere,’ arouse ‘serious concern,’ they assert.

Experts call on Washington ‘to immediately end any threat against Cuba’s sovereignty.’

They also call on UN member states to take ‘appropriate measures’ within the framework of the United Nations to preserve the international legal order.

The UN Security Council and General Assembly are themselves called upon to ‘urgently examine threats against Cuba, as a matter affecting international peace and security.
