Speaking on Magik9 on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, Jacques Desrosiers said that the process, which started on July 20 in nine departments and on July 30 in the West department, is going quite well.
“As of Monday, August 3, 870 centers, which represents more than half of the registration centers, are operating normally across the country. On that Monday alone, thirteen thousand voters were registered,” revealed the CEP president, announcing that the electoral institution will continue to open additional registration centers.“This week, we plan to open registration centers in the first and second districts of Port-au-Prince in accessible areas. As the State improves security, there will be accessible zones and centers will be opened to facilitate electoral operations in those areas. At the same time, there are operations in upper Artibonite and in a few communes in lower Artibonite,” explained the president of the CEP, reminding that all voting centers are being converted into registration centers.
“Between July 20 and August 3, about 60,000 voters have already registered on the electoral roll. The CEP expects to register between 3 and 4 million voters before October 13, the end date of the registration process,” added Jacques Desrosiers.It’s important to remember that the two most populous departments in the country, the West and Artibonite, have several municipalities that are completely controlled by gangs. According to the Provisional Electoral Council, at least 23 municipalities in Haiti are under the control or influence of armed groups. These municipalities are mainly in four departments: West (12), Artibonite (8), Centre (3), and Northwest (1).
When asked how this reality could affect the forecast of 3 to 4 million voters expected by the CEP, Jacques Desrosiers said he relies on the commitments of security officials. “We are trusting the commitments of the State. Those who are responsible for security and who have pledged to improve the security situation across the country to facilitate electoral operations,” he said.Jacques Desrosiers took advantage of his appearance on the show Panel Magik to remind everyone that citizens need their national ID cards or a certificate issued by the National Identification Office if they don’t have a card, in order to be registered as voters. The CEP president also reminded that a citizen who isn’t registered as a voter can’t run as a candidate.
