The verb became flesh in the books on the day of the Feast of Corpus Christi. The El Rancho Convention Center hosted, in a buzz of excitement, on Thursday, June 4, the 32nd edition of Livres en folie. For this grand book celebration, which honored the famous Haitian writer René Depestre, 114 authors were signing books and 1,100 titles were available. It was 6 p.m., and readers were still picking up their copies at the C3 Éditions counter.
It was almost noon when we arrived at the El Rancho Convention Center in Pétion-Ville, after endless hours stuck in traffic on the Bourdon road. To reach Pétion-Ville and witness the country’s biggest book fair, the bus ride was long and tiring. But it was worth it. In this context of widespread crisis, this event offered a moment to smile, just a moment to let hope breathe.
